Historic Home In Hillsboro, New Mexico

184 Elenora, Hillsboro, New Mexico 88042 | Sierra County

Details

Own a piece of Hillsboro History.  Built in 1894, this late Victorian style home is a New Mexico Cultural Property and on the National Register of Historic Places by the Dept of the Interior, officially known as the George and Ninette Miller House.  The home is built from gold slag, blocks of iron silicate with traces of gold and copper.  Wood for the home came from the razed studio of famed photographer J.C. Burge, best known for images of Native Americans and U.S. military circa 1875-1890. His images have appeared in Ken Burns documentary films.

The two gals that are painted in the stucco wall on the porch are, left, Ninette Miller and sister Harriett Galles, circa 1900.  Harriet’s son prosecuted Sheriff Pat Garrett’s murderer in 1909 and defended Secretary of the Interior, Albert Bacon Fall, in the Teapot Dome Scandal in the late ‘20s.

It’s featured in the book, Houses in Time.  The property was first owned by Justice Frank W. Parker, appointed to the Territorial Supreme Court by President Benjamin Harrison.  Parker became the first New Mexico Chief Justice in 1912.

Main home has two bedrooms, one bath, living room, fireplace and a large country kitchen.  A later addition in 2006 features a one bedroom, one bath mother-in-law suite and laundry room.
