Historic Victorian Home in Island Falls, Maine

This 5–6-bedroom 1.5 bath Queen Anne Victorian home in the heart of Island Falls Maine is just waiting to be restored to its former glory.  Built in 1893 by George Kelley, a Timber Baron/lumberman in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the home sits on a well-manicured 0.9+/- acre lot in the middle of Island Falls.

The home has a large wrap around front porch as well as a smaller side porch.  The kitchen still contains what are believed to be the original cupboards.  The laundry area is in the kitchen.  From the kitchen you can access the cold storage room and barn and the butler’s pantry as well as the rest of the home.  The stained-glass windows and hardwood floors (including a true parquet floor in the music room) are in relatively good condition.  The ornate woodwork and carvings throughout the home along with the pocket doors between the living room and music room testify to the workmanship of its builders and is most noticeable in the living room fireplace mantle. The final downstairs room was most likely the ladies’ day room and is now a half bath/bedroom but would make a nice office space or a second full bath.

From the front entry you climb a curved staircase to the upstairs.  The master bedroom echoes the downstairs with its stained-glass windows, hardwood floors and accented woodwork.  3 more bedrooms also have hardwood floors and closets. The 5th bedroom is on an offset hallway as is the full bath and the back stairs to the kitchen. In the bathroom is the entrance to the attic and cupola.  The final feature of this floor is the sleeping porch overlooking the southern driveway

The attached barn/garage is still used for storage and can house smaller vehicles and has storage above.  The sloping lawn features fruit trees, a patch of rhubarb, flower gardens and a patch of fiddlehead ferns.  From the back yard you have direct access to both ATV and snowmobile trails. The Mattawamkeag river is just a minute’s walk from the front door.
